Friendship is Integral to Your Health

Friendship is Integral to Your Health

With weight loss as my sole focus in life four years ago, I spent months isolating myself from my friends and keeping to myself so I could maintain control over my food. But, as my understanding of total wellbeing has grown, I’ve learned just how wrong I was in doing that. Can friendship keep you healthy? Solid friendships are a key element of wellbeing.

They Increase Your Sense of Belonging & Purpose

To have people in your life who love and support you, who need you in their lives as much as you need them in yours . . . there is no greater sense of purpose.

So, can friendship keep you healthy, for real? A feeling of belonging, whether with one person, or a group keeps you mentally healthy.

They Reduce Your Stress

Just try to be stressed while surrounded by your very best friends, laughing and catching up.

“When we get at least six hours of daily social time, it increases our wellbeing and minimizes stress and worry. The six hours includes time at work, at home, on the telephone, talking to friends, sending e-mail, and other communication.”

They Improve Your Self-Confidence

A great friend will help you to always feel your best. She’ll remind you of your best qualities when you can’t see them for yourself, and she’ll keep you grounded when you get a little too conceited.

Can Friendship Keep You Healthy?

We should all always be striving for wellbeing, not weight loss or any other superficial goal, and there is a social aspect to wellbeing. People thrive on good, healthy relationships with family and friends who help to increase your sense of purpose, reduce stress, and improve self-confidence.

So, what are you waiting for? Call up a friend you haven’t seen for a while and make plans to get together!
