The biggest lie I ever told myself was that I couldn’t afford to lose weight. I was convinced for years that the only way to lose weight was to pay for a gym membership and all kinds of fancy “diet food.” I didn’t know how to get exercise without a gym membership.
Once I committed to doing whatever I had to do to get myself healthy though, a whole new world opened up to me and I learned that you don’t need a gym to get fit.
Just because you don’t have a gym membership doesn’t mean you can’t get in a great workout.
How to Get Exercise Without a Gym Membership by Hiring a Personal Trainer Who Will Come to You
Okay, if a tight budget is what’s holding you back, personal training may not be the best option for you. Working with a great trainer like Steve, though, can be really affordable depending on your needs.
If you’re self-motivated but just need a little direction, find a trainer you can trust and set up a one-hour consult. It will probably cost $50+, but he can assess your needs and set you up with a workout plan that fits your needs.
Follow that plan then check in with him periodically. Again, if you’re self-motivated and know you’ll stick with your plan, you may only need to check in once or twice a year to measure results and refresh your workout plan. This is way more affordable than a gym membership.
Invest in Some Inexpensive Equipment
Materials like a bosu ball, dumbbells, kettlebells, yoga mats and resistance bands are extremely affordable and can provide dozens of workouts on their own. As an added bonus, none of these take up a ton of space either.
If you do decide to work with a personal trainer, he can make recommendations on what would get you the most bang for your buck and help you design a routine using what you have.
On the other hand, if you’ve decided not to go that route, a google search can be just as effective. Just be sure you find yourself on a professional website that can be trusted.
I highly recommend the book Coconuts and Kettlebells for some workouts you can do anywhere.
Find a Great Hiking Trail
It’s no secret that I’m a huge advocate for hiking, and this is the way I first learned how to get exercise without a gym membership.
Get a Dog
Dogs need exercise just as much as we do, and they know it! You get a dog, you’ll have to take him for a daily walk, and you’ll wind up getting your exercise too.
Sign Up for an Event
Pretty quickly after I committed to my healthier lifestyle back in 2015, I signed up for a half marathon. With Steve’s guidance, I trained for about 8 months and I did it!
In the meantime, I also completed a couple of 5Ks, and lost 40 pounds. I still can’t believe I did any of that. Running a mile in high school was always an accomplishment, so I never dreamed I’d run 13.1 miles!
I truly believe we can do anything we set our minds to.
If you aren’t exercising now, make a commitment to yourself to start. 30 minutes once or twice a week is a great way to ease into an exercise routine, but work with your doctor or a personal trainer to determine what’s best for you.
Find something that fits into your budget and your lifestyle and start changing your life!
